BFB_2017_KRHS_Volunteers_01Thanks to the work of more than 40 volunteers, the Wilmot Community Association’s (WCA) 13th annual Black Fly Blitz on Memorial Day – Monday, May 29 – was a resounding success. Proceeds from the Black Fly Blitz support the WCA, which owns and operates the WCA’s Red Barn, a community center, and Timothy Patten Park, a beach and playground. The track and cross-country teams at Kearsarge Regional High School (KRHS) receive a portion of the race proceeds.

Several members of the KRHS track and cross-country teams and their coaches assisted with the race. They included: Marliese Baer, Jenna Bears, Mya Dube, Kasey Lipscomb, Trevor Pauling, Avril Prak and David Wallace. KRHS coaches, staff and parents assisting with the event included Peter Angus, Ernie Brake, Brian Pauling and Ed Rehor.

BFB_2017_FAST_01David Zuger, Wilmot police chief, led the nearly 170 runners on course in a police cruiser. Nola Aldrich was the honorary starter. Members of the Wilmot Volunteer Fire Department’s FAST Squad including Ethan Ballan, CJ Brim, Sean Brunel, Scott Carpenter, Storm Connor, Dave Herr, Jonathan Jusczyk, Philip Nicholson and Darren Phipps and were on hand to assist with any medical emergencies. The Wilmot Ladies Aid Society loaned their tables. The Wilmot Highway Department provided road barricades to ensure participants’ safety at intersections along the course.

Janet Baker, Sondra Brake, Lisah Carpenter, Kimberlee Esposito, Mary Kulacz, Margaret Monto, Jan Sahler, Rachel Seamans and De Segerson baked cookies and provided other foods for the people who participated in the race.

BFB_2017_Marc_Davis_01Bill Burris set up his wonderful handmade games. He was ably assisted by Adam Glass. Rosanna Eubank-Long applied temporary tattoos – in a black fly motif – to the delight of lots of children and adults.

Black Fly LogoIt’s going to be a great morning! Once again, the WCA will celebrate Memorial Day with the ever-popular Black Fly Blitz 5K run/walk. A fan favorite for runners and walkers alike, the race steps off at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 29.

Avoid the rush – register today! You can register online or fill in a form and mail it to the WCA. Don’t’ delay; the deadline for pre-registration is Friday, May 26.

7:30 a.m. – sign-in and day of race registration opens on the  Town Green at the intersection of Valley and Village roads in Wilmot.

9 a.m. – and they’re off for a fabulous run or walk around the scenic Wilmot loop.
10:15 a.m – awards will be presented at the Bandstand on the Town Green.


Post-race fun includes music on the bandstand with Cloud Duo. They will play classic rock and country music. There will be great games for the kids and temporary black fly tattoos for all.




The Black Fly Blitz is the WCA’s largest fundraiser. Thank you to all the runners, walkers and sponsors who support this fun and festive morning. A portion of the race proceeds will be donated to the Kearsarge Regional High School track and cross-country teams.

The 13th annual 5K walk/run will start at 9 a.m. Monday, May 29 at the intersection of Kearsarge Valley and Village roads. Check out the race course! Stick around, after the race there will be music, games and more.

Reading by New York Times’ bestselling author Tom Ryan

2017_WCA_Tom_Ryan_01Everyone was thrilled to have New York Times’ bestselling author, Tom Ryan come to town. Tom gave a reading and talk about his latest book,  Will’s Red Coat  on April 27.

A true story, Tom’s newest book shares the rewards and challenges of adopting Will, an elderly dog.

Thanks a million! The WCA playground and beach are ready for action!


The WCA’s Timothy Patten Park is looking spiffy and ready for fun. A fantastic crew of volunteers spent the morning of Saturday, April 29 hard at work. The beach and playground have been raked and the docks are out.

The WCA is grateful to the small but hardy group of volunteers who gave up their morning to get the playground and beach ready for summer. A huge thank you goes out to Rachel Seamans who organized the cleanup event.“It was a great morning.” said Rachel, “The black flies were still asleep but the sun was out.” She was ably assisted by family and friends, including:

Bestselling author Tom Ryan comes to Wilmot

Wills_Red_Coat_CoverDog lovers and book lovers will not want to miss Tom Ryan’s talk and reading at the WCA at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 27. Jointly sponsored by the WCA, Morgan Hill Bookstore and Wilmot Public Library, the event will take place at the WCA’s Red Barn at 64 Village Road in Wilmot.

The author of New York Time’s bestseller Following Atticus, Ryan will talk about and read from his latest book, Will’s Red Coat. This new book chronicles his life with Will, a deaf and mostly blind dog. Beautifully written, Will’s Red Coat is both heartbreaking and uplifting. A story of patience, empathy, and love, Ryan shares the challenges and rewards of adopting an elderly dog. “The WCA is delighted to be part of Ryan’s book tour for his new memoir,” says Nancy Large, president of the WCA.

In addition to listening to Ryan, you will be able to meet his dog Samwise and get your copy of Will’s Red Coat signed. Books will be available for sale from Morgan Hill Bookstore.

BFB_2016_1st_Man_01Registration is open for the region’s favorite 5K! The WCA’s Black Fly Blitz steps off at 9 a.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29. Participants who register by May 1 will receive a free T-shirt.

Participants can register online, by mail or on site the day of the race. Online and mail-in registration closes at noon Friday, May 26! Day-of-the-race registration begins at 7:30 a.m. under the tent on the town green at the intersection of Kearsarge Valley and Village roads in Wilmot.

Until May 26, race registration is: 

Children – 8 and younger free
Youths – 9 to 17 $15
Adults – 18 and older $20

On race day, registration for participants 9 years and older will increase by $5.

BFB_2014_KRHS_volunteers_07“For the sixth consecutive year, coaches and members of the Kearsarge Regional High School track and cross-country teams will be assisting the WCA on race day,” said Ann Davis, a member of the WCA Board of Directors. Ann and her husband, Marc, are co-directors of the race. To acknowledge the KRHS volunteers’ time, the WCA will donate a portion of the race proceeds to the teams.

The 3.1-mile, 5K scenic course is a clockwise loop that starts on Village Road and continues on Shindagan Road, to Cross Hill Road, to Campground Road and then to Village Road.It is a relatively flat race over slightly undulating terrain.

Water will be available at the race mid-point. Runners and walkers will receive free beverages and snacks after the race.

Wildlife diseases next topic for Chief David White Safety and Wellness Series

Wildlife_Services_National_Rabies_MgtAfter rabid foxes and skunks were found in the Kearsarge region in 2016, the WCA is proud to announce the next topic in the Chief David White Safety and Wellness Series. Wildlife Biologist Anthony Musante will present a program on rabies and other wildlife diseases at 2 p.m. Monday, April 17. The talk and slide show will be held at the WCA’s Red Barn at 64 Village Road in Wilmot.

Encountering a rabid animal is frightening and can have serious consequences. Anthony Musante is with the USDA/APHIS-Wildlife Services. He will share information and answer your questions about rabies, avian influenza, tularemia, leptospirosis and other wildlife diseases. He will also cover surveillance of these diseases in New Hampshire.

Established in memory of Wilmot’s former police chief, this workshops series covers a wide range of safety and health-related topics. The series is possible due to generous donations made to the WCA in Chief White’s name. All talks and workshops are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Thanks a million! The WCA Pancake Breakfast – tasty as ever!

2017_03_WCA_Pancakes_06The WCA’s Red Barn was back in the breakfast business on Sunday morning, March 19. The WCA has a long tradition of Sunday breakfasts. It’s been a while since the last one and they have been missed by all.
The WCA is indebted to the many volunteers who gave their time and talents to make the breakfast a success. Heaps of applause goes to the chief cooks and bottle washers, Rachel Seamans and Amber Gove. “We’ve constantly heard how much people miss Sunday morning pancakes at the WCA and were happy to bring them back,” said Rachel. “It was great fun. Everyone had a wonderful time,” added Amber.

Coffeecakes, breads and more were donated by some of Wilmot’s finest bakers and a great kitchen crew was on hand for Sunday. “We want to thank everyone who came out to help us. We couldn’t have done it without you,” said Rachel. The bakers and kitchen crew included Ann Davis, Darlene Delano, Kim Esposito, Adam Glass, Judy Hauck, Darlene Hoyt, Chris Jensson, Mary Kulacz, Nancy Large, Sandy Messer, Michelle Robinson and De Segerson,

The WCA is always happy to help local high school and middle school students earn their community hours. Amber’s sons Josiah and Avery Gove helped with breakfast along with Victoria Cruz, Jacob DuPuis, Carly Esposito, Carla Hoyt, Jack Schwendler and Elijah Westerburg.
